Founded in 2021 by Michelle Young, Mind Over Matter Counseling & Consulting was created from a passion for helping individuals, couples, and families discover hope, healing, and lasting change. Michelle believes that everyone deserves a safe, supportive space where they feel heard, valued, and empowered to grow.

As a licensed mental health therapist, Michelle is committed to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health by providing compassionate prevention, intervention, education, and counseling services. She understands that no two journeys are alike and takes an individualized, client-centered approach, tailoring treatment to each person's unique goals, strengths, and experiences.

Michelle strives to create a welcoming, judgment-free environment where clients can explore life's challenges with confidence and authenticity. Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, life transitions, trauma, or simply seeking personal growth, she is dedicated to walking alongside you with empathy, respect, and evidence-based care.

Michelle Young
Therapist, MA, LPC-S, MQAP
Executive Director/ Owner

Michelle Young has dedicated her career to helping individuals and families break free from cycles of generational trauma, dysfunction, and adversity. Having grown up in a home impacted by poverty, domestic violence, and addiction, Michelle understands firsthand the resilience it takes to overcome life's challenges. She believes that our past may shape us, but it does not define us. That belief has become the foundation of her life's work—helping others recognize their own strength, discover hope, and create meaningful, lasting change.

Michelle's personal experiences have cultivated a deep sense of compassion, authenticity, and understanding that allows her to meet each client exactly where they are. She is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment where healing can begin and individuals feel empowered to move forward with confidence.

Michelle earned her Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from Hannibal-LaGrange University before pursuing her Master of Arts in Counseling at Missouri Baptist University, graduating in 2014. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a Missouri Qualified Addictions Professional (MQAP), and a Certified Life Coach. Throughout her career, Michelle has been passionate about providing evidence-based, client-centered care while helping clients build resilience, strengthen relationships, and achieve their personal goals.

As the founder of Mind Over Matter Counseling & Consulting, Michelle is dedicated to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and making quality mental health services accessible to her community. She believes that healing begins when people feel genuinely seen, heard, and supported.

Outside of the office, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband, children, and their two dogs at their home just outside of Troy, Missouri. Her faith, family, and commitment to serving others continue to inspire both her personal life and her work as a therapist.

Kirstynn Greer, LPC

Kirstynn is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who earned her Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Lindenwood University. She provides counseling services for adolescents and adults ages 12 and older, with a primary focus on treating anxiety, depression, and life's many transitions.

Kirstynn is passionate about empowering individuals to recognize their strengths, overcome life's challenges, and build fulfilling, meaningful lives. She believes that healing is not about perfection but about making progress, discovering resilience, and embracing personal growth.

Known for her compassionate and empathetic approach, Kirstynn creates a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment where clients feel heard, understood, and valued. She is dedicated to meeting each person exactly where they are in their journey, tailoring treatment to their unique needs and goals while walking alongside them every step of the way.

Whether clients are navigating difficult emotions, overcoming personal obstacles, or striving to become the best version of themselves, Kirstynn is committed to helping them develop the confidence, skills, and insight needed to create lasting, positive change.

Outside of the counseling office, Kirstynn enjoys spending time with her family on their farm, where she finds peace and balance in nature. That love of the outdoors is reflected in her office, which is thoughtfully filled with plants and calming touches to create a warm, welcoming space where clients can feel comfortable, relaxed, and at ease from the moment they walk through the door. She believes that a nurturing environment can be an important part of the healing process and strives to ensure every client feels safe, supported, and truly at home.

Robert Powell, PLPC

Robert is a dedicated Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor who earned his degree at Missouri Baptist University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Robert is passionate about helping individuals, couples, and families overcome life's challenges while discovering their strengths and building meaningful, lasting change. He believes that healing happens through connection, self-awareness, and creating a supportive environment where clients feel safe to be themselves.

Robert works with adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), relationship concerns, family conflict, and life transitions. He takes a compassionate, collaborative approach to therapy, partnering with clients to identify their goals, develop practical coping strategies, and create lasting positive change.

Drawing from evidence-based practices, Robert helps clients better understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while building skills to manage stress, regulate emotions, and improve overall well-being. He enjoys working with couples to strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and deepen emotional connection, as well as helping families improve relationships and navigate challenges together.

One of Robert's unique passions is incorporating mindfulness and nature-based practices into the therapeutic process. He believes that spending time in nature and developing present-moment awareness can be powerful tools for reducing stress, increasing emotional balance, and promoting healing. When appropriate, Robert integrates mindfulness techniques that encourage clients to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and cultivate resilience in everyday life.

Known for his calm, empathetic, and approachable style, Robert creates a welcoming, judgment-free space where clients feel heard, supported, and empowered throughout their healing journey. He believes that no one should have to navigate life's difficulties alone and is committed to walking alongside each client as they work toward greater confidence, emotional wellness, and personal growth.

Nathanael Voss, LPC

Nathanael Voss is a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor (PLPC) dedicated to helping individuals, couples, and families navigate life's challenges with compassion, authenticity, and purpose. He believes that every person's story is unique and strives to create a safe, welcoming environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to grow.

Nathanael works with adolescents and adults ages 16 and older, providing support for a variety of concerns including relationship challenges, life transitions, anxiety, stress, and personal growth. He has a special passion for helping couples strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and deepen emotional connection while also working alongside families to foster healthier relationships and stronger family dynamics.

For clients who desire it, Nathanael thoughtfully integrates faith-based counseling into the therapeutic process. He recognizes that spiritual beliefs can be a powerful source of hope, resilience, and healing and is committed to honoring each client's values and beliefs without judgment. Whether incorporating faith into sessions or utilizing evidence-based therapeutic approaches alone, Nathanael tailors treatment to meet each client's individual goals and preferences.

Nathanael believes that meaningful growth happens when people feel genuinely supported and understood. His calm, grounded, and collaborative counseling style encourages clients to explore challenges, build on their strengths, and develop practical tools that lead to lasting change.

He offers both in-person and virtual counseling sessions, with convenient daytime appointments available to meet the needs of busy individuals and families.

Christina Gawedzinski, LPC-S

Christina is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who is passionate about helping children, adolescents, and families navigate life's challenges with confidence and resilience. She earned her degrees from Culver-Stockton College and Lindenwood University and has dedicated her career to supporting individuals through difficult experiences while fostering growth, healing, and emotional well-being.

In addition to her work at Mind Over Matter Counseling & Consulting, Christina serves as a full-time therapist for the Lincoln County School District, where she works closely with students and families to address social, emotional, and behavioral concerns. This experience has provided her with extensive knowledge of the unique challenges children and adolescents face both at school and at home.

As a trained EMDR and trauma therapist, Christina utilizes evidence-based approaches including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Solution-Focused Therapy to help clients identify strengths, develop healthy coping skills, and create meaningful change. She is particularly passionate about helping clients process difficult experiences, build resilience, and establish sustainable self-care practices that support long-term emotional wellness.

Known for her warm, compassionate, and empathetic approach, Christina believes that healing happens through connection, understanding, and practical strategies that can be applied to everyday life. Her goal is to help clients overcome obstacles, strengthen their confidence, and become the healthiest, most authentic version of themselves.

DJ Schmidt, PLPC

DJ is a dedicated Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor who earned his degree at Missouri Baptist University where he spent time playing baseball. DJ is passionate about helping children, adolescents, and adults overcome obstacles, build resilience, and discover their full potential. He believes that every individual has unique strengths, and his goal is to help clients develop the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to thrive through life's challenges.

DJ enjoys working with clients ages 6 and older, providing support for a variety of concerns including ADHD, life transitions, career exploration, sports performance, anxiety, and personal growth. His approach is collaborative, encouraging, and client-centered, meeting each person where they are while creating realistic strategies that promote lasting success.

One of DJ's primary areas of interest is sports psychology. He works with athletes of all ages to strengthen their mental game by addressing performance anxiety, building confidence, improving focus, and overcoming mental barriers. DJ believes that success isn't just about physical ability—it also comes from developing resilience, emotional regulation, and a healthy mindset both on and off the field.

DJ also has a special passion for working with individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Drawing from both his professional training and personal experience, he understands the unique challenges that can come with ADHD. He partners with clients to create practical, individualized strategies that improve organization, emotional regulation, time management, and everyday functioning while embracing the strengths that often accompany neurodiversity.

In addition, DJ enjoys helping clients navigate life transitions and career decisions. Whether someone is preparing for graduation, entering the workforce, changing careers, or simply feeling uncertain about the future, he provides guidance and support to help clients identify their goals, discover their purpose, and confidently move toward the next chapter of life.
